A Bag Built to Carry it All!

L.L.Bean was founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean, an outdoorsman from Maine. Over the decades, L.L.Bean grew from a small mail-order business into a nationally recognized retailer known for its outdoor living supplies and dependable quality.

One of the company’s most enduring products, the Boat and Tote bag, was introduced in 1944. Originally designed as a sturdy canvas ice bag for carrying blocks of ice from the car to the icebox, it was made from heavy-duty cotton canvas with reinforced handles that could withstand substantial weight. Over time, the Boat and Tote evolved from a utilitarian tool into a cultural icon. Available in a range of sizes, colors, and custom monogramming, it has remained largely unchanged in construction, reflecting L.L.Bean’s belief in classic design over trends.
