“A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned” – this well known phrase is attributed to the poet George Herbert from his “Outlandish Proverbs” collection.

Wouldn’t your pennies look snazzy accumulating in one of our vintage cast iron banks? Originating in the early 19th century, cast iron banks for children were created to encourage saving habits from an early age. The 1930’s found “still banks” used as a popular advertising tool by banking institutes. A still bank was a mini-model of the bank’s building fashioned of cast iron, with their name engraved in the front of the building.

Following the popularity of the still bank, came the mechanical bank which was a big hit with children. When you insert a coin, the mechanism on the bank would move, a baseball player sliding into home plate, the mouth on the figure would move, or a message would pop up congratulating the child on their thriftiness. Our banks currently offered on the app include depictions of Uncle Sam and of a dentist yanking a tooth. The endless possibilities of design for these banks means you’ll never know what wacky iteration of the classic piggy bank you’ll come across next!
