Nintendo’s release of The Game Boy on April 21, 1989, marked a pivotal moment in handheld gaming history. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the Game Boy was revolutionary for its time, offering portable gaming with a monochrome LCD screen and a library of engaging titles. Its initial success was bolstered by the inclusion of the blockbuster game “Tetris”, which played a significant role in the system’s widespread adoption.

The Game Boy’s enduring popularity led to several iterations, including the Game Boy Color (1998) and the Game Boy Advance (2001), each enhancing the gaming experience while maintaining the core appeal of portability & accessibility.

This legacy laid the foundation for Nintendo’s future handheld consoles, including their newest iteration of a handheld console, the Switch.
