How Can I Plug in to Retail?
August 1, 2026 marked the first day Care & Share opened its doors to the public in its new home at 355 Maple Avenue, Harleysville PA. What an exciting day! Our first day shoppers spent over $35,000 during that initial day of our operations! In addition, team members spent over $2,000 on the pre-opening event the night before!
We are so grateful for the public’s response. We are also thankful to all our volunteers who have done so much to add to the success. Thank you.
So as we gather in the new space, many volunteers are continuing to work in the areas they have historically served, but many have approached us and asked how they can help going forward. We would like to outline some of the many tasks that we could use your help with.
In today’s article, we will talk about opportunities in the Retail Spaces.
Public-facing opportunities
Rich Palmer, Retail Director, is looking for many willing hands! There are multiple ways that your service can demonstrate to our community that all are welcome at Care & Share.
Register hub – We need cashiers and baggers! We have eight registers, and we’re open weekdays 9-7, Saturdays 9-5, and Sundays Noon-5. Afternoons and evenings are especially needed. Our new Hub Manager, Amanda Soliday, is ready to provide a detailed orientation on how to be a great cashier and/or bagger. We currently use a mix of barcode (scannable) tags and manual entry tags, and we will train you. The registers are the same setup you may be familiar with from Souderton.
Restockers – With our customers buying a lot of merchandise, we need volunteers to keep our merchandise fresh and well-stocked. This includes restocking clothing, home goods, electronics, books, toys, and more. Retail manager Marco Strozzieri looks forward to guiding and supporting your work in filling our shelves. In time, we will also begin our tag color rotation and will pull unsold merchandise from the floor to send to the Outlet.
Dressing Rooms – Our new dressing rooms are currently a work in progress, but upon completion, we will need volunteers to hand out keys, answer customer questions, and keep the area neat by restocking unpurchased items.
Art Hangers – Artwork is a very large and important category for Care & Share. We historically sold over 40,000 pieces a year, and in our new space aim to exceed 50,000 pieces! The art is currently placed by a small group of dedicated volunteers who would welcome some help! Maybe this is you!
Furniture Sales – Our second floor furniture gallery is fast becoming known for its terrific selection of quality pieces. We are interested in training volunteers who can accept customers’ orders and use a simple computer print set up to handle sales. This is not running a register – the customer will pay at the sales hub – but you will create the sales slips. You do not need to be able to move furniture!
Jewelry Counter – We need friendly volunteers to assist customers at the jewelry station. Help keep the display cases attractive and inviting.
Greeters – Stationed near the entrance, you will direct customers arriving as to which direction to go, find a shopping cart, and provide a friendly welcome. Many customers remark how the greeters set our stores apart from other retailers. You can provide a positive initial impression!
We have reinstituted our Volunteer wall calendars! They are now on display in the Team Breakroom. Please see Suzanne, Rich, Amanda or Marco if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a shift. Shifts can be 2-, 4-, or 8-hours. You can work multiple times a week, once a week, or once a month – we’re flexible and appreciate what you can provide. It greatly helps us plan if we know who is signed up, so we appreciate your cooperation.
