Today was a long day, but such a good one. One of the things I enjoy most about my job is the relationship-building — and some of my favorite connections are with newly arrived refugee families.
Meet my new bestie, “Lucy”. She’s 5 years old, from Algeria, and was the only one in her family who spoke English. Imagine the dynamic — a very animated 5-year-old translating for all of us! She was so excited to tell me how her “new place” was so CLEAN. She couldn’t believe it. She said she had never been anywhere that felt that clean before.
Her next question? Whether she could have the (toy) bathtub and baby carrier — because she was getting two dolls. I asked what their names would be… maybe “Sarah” and “Lucy”? She burst out laughing. “No, silly!” The dolls will obviously be named Anna and Elsa (from the movie “Frozen”).
Care & Share welcomes refugee families who have a sponsor, and we spend an evening helping them pick out items their sponsor couldn’t obtain. This particular family has had a very tough first year in the U.S. — mom welcomed a new baby, and dad suffered a serious workplace injury when a forklift ran over his leg, requiring surgery and a long recovery.
Supporting families like this truly takes a community. They’ve been lifted up by Trinity Lutheran in Lansdale, as well as the North Penn Mosque, and their care has made a meaningful difference.
Tonight’s total came to just over $2,200, and every bit of it felt meaningful.
Tired? Yes. Grateful? Absolutely. Thank you for your service at Care & Share so we are able to help those in our community!
